Answers to your questions, support for your journey
What is counselling/psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are broad umbrella terms for different types of talking therapies. These services provide support around a variety of emotional or mental health concerns.
Some professionals argue counselling centres on more present or immediate problems, whereas psychotherapy provides longer term support, potentially focusing on historical events or traumas.
I provide an approach tailored to the client's individual needs and circumstances.
What can therapy help me with?
Predominantly, my experience has been working with people who have suffered abuse; however, I am able to support you in tackling a wide variety of emotional or mental health concerns. Some of these areas are highlighted below. If there is a different issue you'd like to discuss, which isn't listed, please give me a call to discuss.
What is an initial assessment?
Following a 20-minute consultation, if we agree to work together, I will send you an initial assessment form. This asks a series of questions to help me begin to understand where you currently find yourself. The form will ask, amongst other questions, about previous experiences, whether you have previously had any therapy and what your reason for attending therapy is.
I request this form is completed prior to our first session so that I can ensure I am the right person for you, that I have the right skills and experience to support you properly and safely.
Will you (the therapist) give me advice?
Sometimes we can feel a little 'stuck' or 'lost', yet I firmly believe each person knows themself best and has the power within to evolve.
I am not there to give advice or make judgements on you in anyway. My role is to walk alongside you as you journey through your thought processes, providing an emotional safety net where needed.
I may ask questions or provide a reflection of the developing picture. This will enable you to explore yourself at greater depths and empower you to formulate your own decisions, conclusions, and future direction.
What are the different therapies used?
I use an Integrative Approach. This means I am trained in multiple theories or practices.
I believe each person is truly unique and as such should not be restricted to one type of therapy. What will work for one person, may not work for another. Being trained in multiple theories enables me to tailor the way I work to each individual person.
Theories I am trained in include cognitive, psychodynamic, person centred, relational and existential. Due to the integrative approach, it is unlikely you would notice the different theories in action and should feel a smooth flow throughout your sessions.
Please see the website pages for further information on the various modes of therapy.
How do I know if I need counselling/psychotherapy?
You may seek therapy at a time of crisis or trauma, or a build-up of ongoing issues or concerns. You may also be encouraged by colleagues, friends, family members or other professionals such as your GP.
Sessions can help you to gain clarity on a particular issue, untangle complex personal problems, change unwanted patterns of behaviour, or embark on a journey of self-development.
How can I be assured of a therapists' professionalism?
I have been highly trained and:
How long does each session last?
The initial meeting lasts around 20 minutes and is an opportunity for us to have a chat and see whether we are a good 'fit' therapeutically.
The therapy sessions typically lasts 50 minutes, however this can be flexible and discussed with me at the initial assessment.
Please arrive on time to make full use of your session.
What is the cost of therapy and how can I pay?
The initial meeting is free of charge.
Please see the fees page for further information on therapy costings.
How regularly do I need to attend?
Typically, sessions are held weekly, however this can vary depending on your personal requirements. This will be discussed with you during our initial meeting and reviewed periodically.
Can I have therapy face to face, online or by telephone?
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted new ways of working, as such I am able to offer online therapy utilising the Microsoft Teams platform.
There are pros and cons to both ways of working and is down to individual preference. Some people prefer face to face therapy as it can feel more personal, whilst others prefer the ease of access online therapy can provide.
I'm worried about someone else, what shall I do?
It can be hard to talk about mental health or suggest therapy to a friend, loved one or colleague. Quite often that person may be anxious about raising the topic themselves or fear judgement. Therefore, it's good to be open and talk to someone you are concerned about. Please see my blog for further information and guidance.
How do I find the right therapist for me?
Finding the right therapist can be an overwhelming experience. Asking these questions can help:
What should I do if I wish to make a complaint or am not happy with the service provided?
I always welcome feedback about the service I offer.
In the first instance, if there is a matter you would like to discuss and you feel you are able, please discuss this with me in session to see if we are able to resolve any issues.
Alternatively, please email me.
